Smythes Creek creates a grounded sanctuary for a young couple, using humble materials to immerse daily life in the rhythm of the rural landscape.
Situated on former farmland near Bendigo, the home creates a simple, rhythmic backdrop to the site's significant gum trees. The design features a staggered plan that forms intimate outdoor pockets, allowing the architecture to engage closely with the land. Constructed from raw concrete blocks, the aesthetic is reserved and agrarian, deliberately eschewing ornamentation to focus on the quality o flight and the feeling of space.
A functional greenhouse serves as the project's focal point, acting as a glazed link between the main residence and an art studio. For the avid gardener clients, this is a working space to propagate native plants and regenerate the site, deeply integrating the built form with the natural environment.
