Walkway House immerses a family in the canopy of a rugged coastal site, wrapped in a living veil of native climbers.
Located on a large, well vegetated block, thedesign focuses on a deep connection to the landscape. The project is defined byan external galvanised steel walkway that wraps around the upper level, acting as an informal circulation path connecting the children's bedrooms. Enclosed insteel mesh, this structure is designed to be overtaken by native plants overtime. This green layer will provide shading and effectively blend the builtform into the surrounding gum trees. A spiral staircase connects this upper promenade to a south facing fern garden below, creating dynamic movement between the levels.
The walkway encompasses a central courtyard featuring a bespoke curved concrete chimney, creating a focal point for outdoor fires. At ground level, the house is grounded by concrete edge beams that form continuous seating around the perimeter, inviting occupants to engage with the building's edge. A concave concrete nook houses an outdoor shower, establishing a practical ritual for washing off salt and sand after surfing at the nearby beach.
Internally, the volume creates a dramatic spatial experience. A double height void draws the eye up into the canopy, contrasting with a sunken lounge area that feels intimate and welcoming, designed to hold conversation. Extensive glazing on the ground floor connects users to the outdoors in all directions, making the transition between inside and out fluid.
Balancing robust materials with dynamic planning, Walkway House is a resilient, beautiful response to its coastal context.
