Tooborac House

Set within the exposed volcanic plains of central Victoria, Tooborac House is an exercise in grounding. Perched on a rolling, windswept site, the dwelling is choreographed between monumental granite boulders, using the geology of the land to offer a sense of permanence and protection. The architecture adopts an agrarian exterior of FC sheeting and perforated metal — a robust, utilitarian shell designed to weather the exposure of the open landscape.
Inside, this toughness gives way to a refined warmth. A prefabricated timber envelope by Candour creates a tactile, structural rhythm that defines the interior experience. In the double-height living volume, expansive glazing frames the ancient rocks, pulling the landscape’s textures into the daily rituals of the home.
By balancing this raw, timber-lined intimacy with a facade that filters light and provides sanctuary from the elements, the house becomes more than a shelter; it is a quiet, sensory platform for connecting with the elemental character of the site.
